Before writing Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Julia Child had a successful career as an ad agency executive. She also wrote more than fifteen cookbooks. Her autobiography, "My Life in France", won her the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. She was just thirty-four years old when she married Paul. However, she had been cooking since she was 36. Child was an expert in French cooking and started writing articles for magazines such as House and Garden and a column on cooking for the Boston Globe.

Julia Cook's relationship with Paul Child was not exactly normal. Julia was open and outgoing, while Paul was coldly pedantic and kept correcting Julia’s grammar.
